Citrus Addresses Budget Issues, Seeks to Recoup Monetary Losses

Campus also approves Five Year Construction Plan.

Administrators discussed a facilities plan and budget updates at the Aug. 16 Citrus College Board of Trustees meeting Tuesday.

Superintendent/President Dr. Geraldine Perri informed the board that revenue projections from Sacramento are much less then hoped for. July revenues for the state were $539 million below estimates and that the community college system should prepare for potential mid-year cuts.

"We had planned our tentative budget based on the worst-case scenario," said Perri. "With this news from the state we've been able to move from the worst case scenario to second-worst."

The campus endured a "lesser cut," according to Perri, because the campus planned for the worst and was able to keep some funding.

Citrus will have a budget forum Aug. 29 in which a preview of the college's budget will be revealed.

Seeking additional funding, the board approved the campus' participation into the Chancellor's Office Tax Offset Program. The program, run by the California Community College Chancellor's Office, authorizes the Chancellor's Office to aid participating campuses in recouping fees owed to them by former students.

Fees owed, such as campus financial aid funds, library fines, parking fines and child care charges, in addition to many more, can be sought by the tax offset board for collection. According to the Chancellor's Office, in 12 years the program has helped participating colleges recoup $13.1 million in back fees.

The Board also approved of Citrus' Five Year Construction Plan, which includes a slew of construction and renovation projects. There are four remaining projects and are all renovation, according to Carol Horton, vice president of finance and administrative services: the Campus Center renovation, Hayden Hall renovation, Fine Arts/Communication Building, Tech Ed C remodel and the Vocational Technology Building.

At the next board meeting, scheduled for Sept. 13, the campus' budget will be presented for discussion and approval.

BOT meetings are held in the Center For Innovation Building, Community Room, CI 159 at Citrus College: 1000 W Foothill Blvd. All meetings are held at 4:15 p.m.
