Charter Oak Woman's Club Turns Trash Into Cash

Inaugural E-waste Fundraiser held Saturday to generate funds for club's activities.

The Charter Oak Woman's Club set up shop in a parking lot at Royal Oak Middle School, Saturday, to not only help people get rid of their old electronics, but also help in another way.

"This will actually be part of the budget that we have to raise to do our works during the school year," said Jane Bock, Charter Oak Unified board member. This was the first e-waste event held by the Charter Oak Women's Club.

The Woman's Club will be able to donate funds to the Charter Oak Scholarship Foundation for the Woman's Club Scholarship, along with donations to the Salvation Army and Charter Oak County Library, among others.

Almost any type of old electric equipment was accepted as long it had a power cord attached, while big appliances, such as washers and dryers could not be accepted.

E-waste was collected by Gold'n West Surplus, Inc. The truck used to haul away the old electronics was easily filled up, Bock said.

The club received good word of mouth through Facebook and that what little advertising they could do with the budget they had worked well. Some time next week, the club will learn how much money the fundraiser generated, Bock said.

"This is our first time doing it. So we're hoping it's an annual event," Bock said.
