Police Arrest Two With Alleged Stolen Items

Couple had large collection of used car batteries in their vehicle when pulled over, officers said.

discovered what they believe were stolen items and burglary tools in the possession of two people detained during a traffic stop late Monday night.

Arrested were Daniel Thomas, 52, and Latiss Pugh, 44, both from Los Angeles, on suspicion of possessing known stolen property, suspicion of burglary and possessing burglary tools, said Lieutenant Rob Lamborghini. Both suspects were held in lieu of $20,000 bail.

Officers stopped the couple in their vehicle in the 1300 block of South Lone Hill Avenue around 11:30 p.m. Monday. During the stop, officers noticed a collection of 29 used car batteries in their vehicle and tools typically used in burglaries, according to Lamborghini.

It was not immediately known if the couple were at a business during the traffic stop, or if the stop was conducted on Lone Hill.

The man and woman are believed to be connected to a theft of 36 used car batteries from the night of July 4. In that burglary, whoever stole the batteries damaged the protective gate housing the property to gain entry, police said, possibly by hitting it with a vehicle.

Court dates were unavailable for the suspects.
