Aug. 2, 1929: Lemon Prices on the Rise, Foothill to be Paved

On this day in 1929, Glendora lemon growers had reason to be happy with rising lemon prices. A major street also gets a makeover.

The citrus industry was Glendora’s first major industry, and lemon growers were enjoying a good week, according to the Aug. 2, 1929 edition of the Glendora Gleaner. Prices hit as high as $12 to $13.50 a box in Chicago. The newspaper reported “real money” returns among Glendora growers because of the jump in prices. The Gleaner also reported that after months of waiting, Foothill Boulevard would finally be paved from Grand Avenue to Michigan Avenue (now Glendora Avenue).

Glendora says goodbye to the Glendora Heights packing house.

It was a reminder of Glendora's illustrious citrus past, but the Glendora Heights packing house on Foothill and Grand avenues had become a pile of wood and scraps. The Glendora Press documented the packing house's demise  in a series of photos the week of June 23, 1963. The packing house, built in 1912 to turn out hundreds of thousands of citrus crates, met its end at the hands of a wrecking crew. While for 40 years, the packing house provided thousands of jobs and income to the city, the citrus industry had declined and the grove trees had disappeared. The once grand packing house had become a dilapidated eyesore. Deemed a fire hazard by the Glendora Fire Department, the packing house was condemned.

President Taft preferred Glendora oranges.

Glendora oranges graced the dining room table at the White House, according to the Glendora Gleaner. The newspaper reported the Glendora Citrus Association packed oranges in quarter sawed oak boxes and shipped them once a month to President William Howard Taft.   The paper boasted that Taft ordered the supply because of the “well known and recognized superiority of the fruit raised in the Glendora district.”

Citrus Falls Short of Title, Loses to City College of San Francisco 83-81

DeEnd Parker's rebound and put back is the difference after Fred Sturdivant blocked Citrus' go-ahead basket attempt.

VENTURA – The last time Citrus College played against City College of San Francisco was for the 1962 state title, which CCSF won 71-56.  Sunday afternoon, it was dejavu, as once again Citrus would face CCSF in the title game, and once again they would fall short of winning the title.  The Owls advanced with a 94-84 victory over Fresno City College Saturday night.  Citrus, who was eliminated by last year’s eventual champions Saddleback College, would not get a chance to exact revenge as CCSF defeated the Gauchos in the other semi-final matchup 65-60.  DeEnd Parker’s rebound and put back with 2.5 seconds remaining in the game was the difference as San Francisco escaped with the 83-81 victory.  ”We defended the last shot well,” Citrus coach …

Stuck for Meal Ideas? Why Not Look to Glendora's Past?

Glendora's history in the citrus industry can spark zesty meal and snack ideas for your kitchen.

Not sure what to cook for dinner? Tonight, instead of reaching for the recipe books, try hitting the history books and let the story of Glendora's citrus industry inspire you in the kitchen. In the latter part of the 1880s, the widespread sale of real estate in California began to decline leaving many people in the Glendora area disillusioned and penniless. Add to the mix, water supply problems and an inability to market their product that made their principal way of life, farming, very difficult, it is safe to say that the Glendorans were in trouble. Help came in the form of a tree. The introduction of the citrus tree injected much needed prosperity into the area. Vast groves of lemon and orange trees helped establish Glendora as the …
