Poll: Would You Vote for Higher Taxes to Save School, College Funding?

Gov. Jerry Brown again calls for support of November initiatives to ease California budget deficit.

Gov. Jerry Brown says K-12 schools and both state university systems will suffer even more cuts and force tuition increases if California voters don’t approve a quarter-cent bump in the state’s sales tax rate to 7.5 percent and boost the income tax rate for people making more than $250,000 a year. Local school districts, including Glendora Unified and Charter Oak Unified, are projecting multi-million dollar shortfalls should the tax increases fail to receive voter approval. Brown's critics say the projected $16 billion state budget deficit can be erased without voter-approved tax hikes in November. Whose arguments do you buy?

It's real "nice" that everybody wants to keep funding colleges, but our states should only be subsidizing primary education. College is a priviledge, not an entitlement. Our primary schools are suffering their entitled education in order to fund secondary education. BTW, I have two teenaged kids so don't think I don't want it easy... that would be "nice" but our state can't afford niceties any …   more ›

Brown’s Budget Revise Pins More Hopes on Tax Hikes

Education faces drastic cuts ahead if tax initiatives fail to receive voter approval in November.

Governor Jerry Brown’s May Budget Revise has raised the stakes for voters to pass Brown’s tax initiatives in November, or public school education will face even deeper cuts than expected. Local school districts have been waiting on the May Revise to gauge the impacts the projected cuts will have on schools. If the ballot initiatives to raise taxes fail, the automatic triggers will increase from $657 million to $5.5 billion. The new trigger includes a $2.8 billion deferral and a reduction in program funding of $2.7 billion. This equates to a reduction of 15 days to the school year. Brown said the state deficit has ballooned from $9 billion in January to $16 billion. Local school districts are still analyzing how the numbers will affect them…

Professor’s Trip to North Korea Bridges Cultural Divide

Citrus College professor Dale Salwak recently returned from a "life-changing" trip to North Korea.

Dale Salwak recalls how in April he sat just 30 feet away from new North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at an event celebrating the centennial of the birth of Un’s grandfather, the late Kim Il Sung, in Pyongyang, North Korea. The event was followed by speeches and what Salwak called the one of the most elaborate firework shows synchronized to national music he had ever seen. Salwak captivated audiences during his weeklong trip in the North Korean capital, but it wasn’t passionate speeches on political ideology that had audiences spellbound. It was magic. While tensions continue to mount against the communist country for its nuclear testing, Salwak said diplomacy and cultural exchange is what brought him and a small American delegation to …

Salaries for Cal State Presidents Frozen

A CSU Board of Trustees committee approved freezing the salaries of new Cal State University presidents at the level of their predecessors

The salaries of new Cal State University presidents would be frozen at the level of their predecessors under a policy approved by a CSU Board of Trustees committee today, but private foundations would be permitted to raise funds on their own to increase the compensation by up to 10 percent. The full board will consider the proposal tomorrow. The proposal was approved unanimously by the board's Special Committee on Presidential Selection and Compensation Policy, despite protests being staged outside the meeting by students, teachers and others who said all money - - even private dollars -- should be used to reduce tuition or increase teacher salaries, not paying executives. During the committee meeting, members insisted that they were …
