Family of Slain South Pas Man Wants Justice in 28-Year-Old Murder

A judge overturned Frank O’Connell’s 1985 murder conviction. But the family of victim Jay French says O’Connell is getting away with murder.

It has been 28 years since Gina French’s husband, Jay, was shot to death, but the emotions are still raw. Jay was 27 years old, a father of a young son who bore his name. And unbeknownst to both her and her husband, Gina said she was also pregnant with Jay’s second child. But Jay was brutally murdered Jan. 5, 1984, shot in the back in the South Pasadena apartment where he both lived and worked as a maintenance man. Before Jay died, he whispered clues to the identity of his killer, clues Gina and the French family say all pointed to one man–then 27-year-old Frank O’Connell. But the former Glendora High School football standout maintained his innocence during the entire 27 years he spent behind bars. And in March, a Pasadena judge found …

Unfortunately Jay was dealt a very bad hand the day he meet, married and had a child with Jeanne Lyon. She appeared to be a sociopath. I do hope she did not end up with the child. I find it disturbing that she, along with her boyfriend Randy Smith, attempted to run Jay down with their car. This was documented in a police report. We already know that we have one evil women and one man willing to …   more ›

Reports of Fights, Rowdy Crowds at Oaktree Festival

No arrests made, no crime established during tail-end of festivities, police said. Lots of verbal arguments between patrons.

Officers had their hands full Friday night when several verbal arguments and shoving matches broke out at the kick-off to the Oak Tree Festival, May 18. Police were already on hand performing extra patrols to watch the large crowds that gathered at St. Dorothy Church, 241 South Valley Center Avenue, when they learned of a verbal argument between carnival workers and several patrons around 10:40 p.m., according to Sergeant Mike Randazzo. The verbal argument was initially described as a fight by other festival patrons and police. Many of the youths involved had fled, with officers attempting to locate them in the surrounding area, according to scanner reports. Officers did speak with those who remained and could not establish a crime, …

I showed up at 1030 and hundreds of teenagers were running around looking for fights that they thought were happening. I saw many shoving matches and my son almost got trampled twice. It could have been a bad scene very quick. Since 10 cops wouldn't have been able to do much if the mob went got rowdy. I believe thats why no reports were made. They needed every officer ready until it was over. …   more ›

Bogus Marine Soliciting Veterans Donations in Glendora

A man dressed in a military uniform is soliciting donations for The Wounded Warrior Project, but a representative for the charity say they have no record of him. Veterans charity groups warn about scammers.

Police are looking into reports that a man dressed in a military uniform has been asking for donations to support veteran charities in front of local grocery stores, but one charity says it does not make such solicitations. The veterans group is reminding residents to remain cautious of individuals soliciting donations in public places. On Thursday, Glendora Police received a report from an eyewitness alleging that a man dressed in a military uniform was claiming to represent the Wounded Warrior Project and was soliciting donations in front of the Vons grocery store. Police scanner reports on May 16 also describe a similar incident.  When witnesses approached the man and inquired about his organization, he immediately left the scene, …

This guy was at the Foothill Vons a few months ago and has been at Sam's Cub, too. Amazingly enough, he produced ID when I asked to see it. This fraud artist even had an easy-up set up at Sam's, which made it look like the store had endorsed him. I think the stores where these solicitors camp themselves have an obligation to verify what they are soliciting. They may not be able to remove them …   more ›

Pretrial Hearing in Overturned Murder Conviction Case Postponed to June

The pretrial hearing on Frank O’Connell’s retrial for the 1984 murder of Jay French will continue to June 11.

The retrial of Frank O'Connell, the 54-year-old Glendora man charged with the 1984 murder of 27-year-old Jay French, will be continued to a June 11 court date. Attorneys with the District Attorney's Office requested the extension during a pretrial hearing Friday morning at the Pasadena Courthouse. O'Connell, who spent 27 years in prison for a murder he maintained he did not commit, was released on bail April 24 after a judge found major faults with his original 1985 trial. After O'Connell’s release, the prosecution in his case has 60 days to re-investigate his case to see if they would like to go forward with a retrial. “We know the case really well and we don’t believe there is a case, but that’s us,” said O'Connelll’s attorney, Peter …

After 27 Years in Prison, Frank O’Connell is Eager to Prove Innocence

Frank O’Connell’s faces a possible retrial after his 1985 conviction was overturned. Now O’Connell hopes justice will prevail the second time around.

Frank O’Connell, 54, remembers the day in 1985 when he left his parents’ Glendora home for his appearance in court. He had been charged with the 1984 murder of 27-year-old Jay French in South Pasadena. But O’Connell knew he had solid alibis and no physical evidence linked him to the crime. He knew he was innocent. “I had a future ahead of me,” said O’Connell. “I was going to put this all behind me.” O’Connell was 27 years old, a former Glendora High School football star, a father of a four-year-old boy. He walked through his parents’ doorway certain he would return back to his family later that day. But it would take 27 years before he would walk through the door again. O’Connell describes the nearly three decades he spent in prison as if …
