As the world awaits Sunday's solar annular eclipse, here are a few great eclipses that have made an impact in history.
The west coast will be the best coast in America to view the solar eclipse this Sunday, and one of the few places on Earth where it can be seen. However, the astronomical phenomenon that we call an “eclipse” has been viewed by many throughout history and has played a critical role in both mankind’s spiritual evolution, and its scientific understanding of the natural world. For the Navajo the word for eclipse means “eating the sun”. Considered an auspicious event, many tribe members will not only avoid catching a glimpse of the ring of fire, but will fast and cease activities altogether. Ancient China: Hsi and Ho, 2137 B.C. The earliest recorded eclipse dates back to sometime around 2137 B.C. and was recorded by Hsi and Ho, two royal …

An FDA-approved vaccine cuts risk of the painful infection by 70 percent.
I wasn't planning to think about shingles all week, but couldn’t avoid it. It started with an email from a close friend saying she had the painful skin rash, which is caused by the varicella-zoster virus. I winced, recalling my own bout of shingles, when I drove to and from work every day, steering with my right hand and holding the seat belt away from my torso with my left, because the pain from having the belt touch the rash on my rib cage was intolerable. The next day, I came across a 2011 Institute of Medicine report on chronic pain. One of the leading causes? Post-herpetic neuralgia, the nerve pain that sometimes follows shingles, and which can last anywhere from weeks to years. The shingles theme continued the next day when I saw my…

America's work places are rife with unfair policies toward mothers.
Looking for something special to get mom this mother's Day? Forget the flowers, jewelry, chocolates or dining out, all things that sound suspiciously like another Hallmark holiday, and imagine something truly original. Give all mothers the gift of universal paid maternity leave. Actually, it's not that original since almost every other country in the world provides it, even poverty stricken third world countries where women are second class citizens. However in America, where we like things fast and cheap, three months of unpaid leave is considered a fitting amount of time and money to dedicate to one of the most significant events in any family, though many moms agree it's not enough time to bond with a baby. California and New Jersey …

An epidemic of for-profit health care hurts the most marginalized members of society
When I was 19, my mother, always known for her big heart, was told by doctors her heart was too big--It was dangerously enlarged. A woman who had struggled through single motherhood to join the Airforce, become an RN and overcome adversities facing women and Native Americans in 1970's Arkanasas was now a welfare recepient. Too poor to stay on the heart transplant list, she was forced into hospice care. This was my introduction to the state of health care in America. We have the best health care in the world--for those who can afford it. Unfortunately my mother couldn't, and she paid the ultimate price because she couldn't afford not to. She died in the month of May, a decade ago. I was 20-years-old. Her death was also my introduction into …

Unless you consume nearly 2 pounds of dairy products daily, you may not be getting enough calcium. But there are alternatives.
Have you eaten your 1.75 pounds of dairy products today? If you’re like most Americans, that’s your share. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Americans consume 630 pounds of milk, yogurt, cheese and ice cream every year, a number that could increase when the agency updates its report in July. Dairy products, particularly low-fat varieties, can be excellent sources of protein, calcium, and vitamin D. But there are other choices for people who don’t like dairy, follow a vegan diet, or are among the 60 percent of adults worldwide who can’t digest milk products. Plenty of nondairy food sources deliver the calcium you need to help keep your bones strong. How much calcium is enough? If you’re older than 50, you need 1,200 mg of …

Are there any dangerous intersections in Glendora?
When two cars collided in the Glendora Marketplace Sunday, some Patch readers called for a traffic signal at the busy intersection. Others believed a traffic signal would only back up traffic and create more hazards. There are several factors that contribute to a dangerous intersection, including a high speed limit, an awkward engineering design, or drivers’ tendency to make illegal turns. According to Glendora Police Chief Rob Castro, local police will sometimes monitor a known troublesome intersection and nab drivers making illegal turns. The city’s engineering department will also monitor intersections for traffic safety. But are there intersections you think the city should pay more attention to? What do you think would help decrease …

Learn to make candy filled rice crispy Easter eggs.
I made this dessert last year for my family and it was a huge hit. While I haven’t tried it with my daughter (she’s not even 2 yet), I know it will become a yearly tradition soon. You’ll need: 6 cups rice crispy cereal 1 10-ounce bag of marshmallows 3 tablespoons of butter 1+ medium sized plastic Easter eggs Before you begin, wash the plastic Easter eggs thoroughly, dry, then lightly coat the inside of the egg with butter. Next, make the standard Rice Crispy treat recipe found on the box of cereal: Let the mixture cool for a couple of minutes. I recommend putting a little butter on your hands for this next part. Place cereal mixture into each side of the plastic eggs. Press and mold the cereal treat into the egg. Do this on each side and …

Planning on some mischief and/or mayhem? Here are some easy pranks to try.
Today is April Fools’ Day, the one day of the year when playing tricks on others is not only expected, but also somewhat encouraged. If you are planning to prank a family, friend or co-worker, please play nice and consider some of these relatively harmless ideas: Tape magnets to the bottom of an empty coffee cup, and attach it to the top of your car. Laugh at all the people who frantically try to get your attention as you drive by. – April Fool Zone Superglue some coins to the sidewalk or any spot that gets a lot of traffic. Make sure it's an appropriate place, then watch people try to get the coins. – Kidz World “Foil” a co-worker - Instructables Guyism offers several April Fools’ Day suggestions: Are you planning to trick someone on …
Male Matters
2:26 pm on Saturday, May 12, 2012
This is yet another incredibly huge distortion of the gender wage gap. Women's “77 cents to men's dollar” doesn't mean, as pay-equity advocates want us to believe, women are paid less than men in the same jobs everywhere in the country. Nor does it mean that, even more incredibly in the vein of the stereotype “men are stronger than women,” every woman earns 23% less than every man, perhaps …   more ›
