As the world awaits Sunday's solar annular eclipse, here are a few great eclipses that have made an impact in history.
The west coast will be the best coast in America to view the solar eclipse this Sunday, and one of the few places on Earth where it can be seen. However, the astronomical phenomenon that we call an “eclipse” has been viewed by many throughout history and has played a critical role in both mankind’s spiritual evolution, and its scientific understanding of the natural world. For the Navajo the word for eclipse means “eating the sun”. Considered an auspicious event, many tribe members will not only avoid catching a glimpse of the ring of fire, but will fast and cease activities altogether. Ancient China: Hsi and Ho, 2137 B.C. The earliest recorded eclipse dates back to sometime around 2137 B.C. and was recorded by Hsi and Ho, two royal …

Competitors in the seventh stage of the 800-mile race give Glendora residents a sight.
After a 30-minute delay, competitors in the Amgen Tour of California continued racing Saturday, traversing much of the San Gabriel Mountains in a big loop on their way to Mount Baldy Village. Over 100 cyclists baked in the sun as the rode through almost 80 miles of the Angeles National Forest, starting in Upland, passing through Azusa, Glendora, up Glendora Mountain Road and finishing on Mount Baldy. Onlookers waited for about two hours before cyclists arrived. In all, the enthusiasts on Sierra Madre at Glendora Mountain Road were treated to about 30 minutes of some of the world's finest cyclists before they sped off onto the treacherous road and out of site.

At least one adult was injured in a two-vehicle crash involving two young children on South Lone Hill Avenue Saturday afternoon. Glendora Police were notified by the California High Patrol dispatch about the crash some time around 4:10 p.m., according to scanner reports. A red minivan was severely rear ended by a black Hummer. The Hummer, however, received a few dents and scratches. It is unknown at this time what caused the collision as it appeared both vehicles were both traveling southbound and were not near an intersection during the crash. Both of the young children were checked by paramedics, but initially appeared to only be shaken up. What vehicle the hospitalized adult was in was not known. The injured party was taken to Foothill …

A judge overturned Frank O’Connell’s 1985 murder conviction. But the family of victim Jay French says O’Connell is getting away with murder.
It has been 28 years since Gina French’s husband, Jay, was shot to death, but the emotions are still raw. Jay was 27 years old, a father of a young son who bore his name. And unbeknownst to both her and her husband, Gina said she was also pregnant with Jay’s second child. But Jay was brutally murdered Jan. 5, 1984, shot in the back in the South Pasadena apartment where he both lived and worked as a maintenance man. Before Jay died, he whispered clues to the identity of his killer, clues Gina and the French family say all pointed to one man–then 27-year-old Frank O’Connell. But the former Glendora High School football standout maintained his innocence during the entire 27 years he spent behind bars. And in March, a Pasadena judge found …
No arrests made, no crime established during tail-end of festivities, police said. Lots of verbal arguments between patrons.
Officers had their hands full Friday night when several verbal arguments and shoving matches broke out at the kick-off to the Oak Tree Festival, May 18. Police were already on hand performing extra patrols to watch the large crowds that gathered at St. Dorothy Church, 241 South Valley Center Avenue, when they learned of a verbal argument between carnival workers and several patrons around 10:40 p.m., according to Sergeant Mike Randazzo. The verbal argument was initially described as a fight by other festival patrons and police. Many of the youths involved had fled, with officers attempting to locate them in the surrounding area, according to scanner reports. Officers did speak with those who remained and could not establish a crime, …

A budget plan that relies on voters' approval of $50 billion in new taxes is not the "smartest of moves," Huff says
Senate Republican Leader Bob Huff (R-Diamond Bar) discussed Governor Jerry Brown's May budget revision released earlier this week. The Governor's plan contains $8.3 billion in proposed cuts and a $50 billion tax hike over seven years, according to a Huff office news release. It also represents a $30 billion increase in state spending since 2007-08, the release said. The revise attempts to close a budget gap of $15.7 billion but Huff officials said the independent Legislative Analysts' Office reports the deficit numbers are probably "north of $17 billion" and could grow even higher. "Senator Huff believes that basing a budget plan on a bet that voters will approve $50 billion in new taxes this November isn't the smartest of moves," …
Los Angeles County Assessor John Noguez' office is under investigation.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley said today County Assessor John Noguez -- whose office is the target of a corruption probe -- should resign. When asked if he had concerns about Noguez continuing to work as assessor, Cooley told reporters, "Yes, I do. I don't think he should be there." "In my view, he should resign in light of everything that's come out publicly and because it's interfering with the discharge of that importantoffice's critical functions," the county's top prosecutor said. "And I think that a change over there is entirely appropriate so that some changes in personnel and other reforms can be implemented to restore the integrity of the organization." A spokesman for the Assessor's Office referred inquiries …

In the first solar eclipse visible in the U.S. in 18 years, the Earth's moon will pass in front of the sun before sunset on Sunday, casting a giant shadow across the land.
A solar eclipse is expected to be visible across much of the western U.S. on Sunday, and Griffith Observatory is planning a public viewing. In the hours before sunset on Sunday, the Earth's moon will pass in front of the sun – the eclipse will be between 5:24 p.m. and 7:42 p.m. "Called an annular solar eclipse, the moon and sun will exactly align Sunday, May 20, creating a "ring of fire" around the moon because of the sun's larger apparent size," reported the Huffington Post. The last solar eclipse visible in the U.S. was in 1994. In Los Angeles, Sunday's eclipse is the most extensive since 1992, according to the observatory. The Griffith Observatory's telescope will be outfitted with special filters, and viewing-glasses will be …

Unfortunately Jay was dealt a very bad hand the day he meet, married and had a child with Jeanne Lyon. She appeared to be a sociopath. I do hope she did not end up with the child. I find it disturbing that she, along with her boyfriend Randy Smith, attempted to run Jay down with their car. This was documented in a police report. We already know that we have one evil women and one man willing to …   more ›
