NFL Season to Kick Off Tonight

Is everyone looking forward to the opening of the NFL season and where do you like watching the games?

As the work force heads home this evening or to their respective viewing destinations for the NFL Season opener tonight, I can’t help but wonder if we are better off without an NFL team in the Los Angeles area. Tonight the Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers take on the New Orleans Saints to open the 2011 NFL season and Glendora football fans are now heading into our 16th year without a local team.

Our 55,000 or so residents in Glendora do not have the luxury of rooting for a local NFL team, so we expand our horizons to teams with other characteristics like team traditions, certain players personalities, fantasy football stakes (for those fantasy football buffs out there), sportsmanship and maybe even just basic uniform designs for those simple minded folk. Notice one characteristic I left off was all the bandwagon fans that follow the teams who won it last. It’s human nature that we will have those front runner fans as a society but for this post, I’ll pretend to ignore we do that.

I for one don’t mind because my favorite team, who will remain nameless for the sake of not sounding biased, would not change even if we did have a team. This Country is indeed a melting pot, and as far as NFL fan bases go, the Los Angeles area may be the biggest melting pot in all of professional sports. I don’t believe our lack of a local team hurts with our desire to cheer on this great sport at all, and furthermore, it actually seems to make more diverse fan bases that lead to better attendance at local bars and restaurants hosting game day happy hours.
