My Sister’s Closet: Local Girls Get Free Prom Dresses

Local charities dress girls up for their big prom nights.

Prom can get very expensive, and to help relieve some of the financial load, local charities and groups are offering girls all they need to look great for prom.

Saturday on the Azusa Pacific University campus, teen girls from all over the San Gabriel Valley region arrived to raid My Sister's Closet and got their pick from hundreds of gently used special occasion dresses, shoes, purses and other accessories to wear for their big night of high school

Program Coordinator Silvana Cavazos began My Sister’s Closet five years ago in response to the growing number of teen girls who said they would not attend their proms because of tight family budgets.

Cavazos and other area service groups including the Azusa/Glendora Soroptimists gathered hundreds of gently used dresses for girls to choose from.

Every year, Cavazos said she sees the demand for free prom dresses grow as the economy continues to lag and parents remain jobless.

“Every girl deserves to look beautiful, despite their financial situation,” said Cavazos. “Especially for prom.”
