St. Dorothy Wins 2011 Catholic Youth Organization Boys Soccer Championship
The St. Dorothy boys soccer team win their first ever championship.
After five years of trying, the St. Dorothy boys soccer team won the 2011 Catholic Youth Organization Boys' Soccer Championship on May 11 in Downey.
Known as a soccer powerhouse throughout the Los Angeles Archdiocese, the St. Dorothy boys’ soccer team has been in the top four teams in CYO for the four previous years. St. Dorothy had made the final four for four straight years but had never made it to the finals.
There are over 150 Catholic schools which participate in the Los Angeles Archdiocese CYO. The Los Angeles Archdiocese is the largest diocese in the United States.

The championship game pitted St. Dorothy School (Glendora) against St. Lawrence Martyr School (Redondo Beach). Both teams were undefeated in league and in the CYO play-offs.
St. Dorothy had an undefeated season of 13 wins. The St. Dorothy team scored a total of 66 goals this year and allowed only 5 goals in 13 games.

Both teams overcame tough opponents in the semi-finals to reach the championship game. St. Dorothy overcame an undefeated team from Compton, Our Lady of Victory School, to reach the CYO Boys’ Soccer Championship game for the first time in the school history.
St. Lawrence defeated the defending 2010 CYO soccer champions, American Martyrs School (Manhattan Beach) in the semi-finals to reach the championship game.
St. Dorothy dominated the game with their signature passing game and tight defense, but despite many close shots on goal, they could not score on the tough defense of St. Lawrence.
Two shots by midfielder Joe Kelly missed by inches as the rocketing ball ricocheted off the goal crossbar. Forward Kevin Erving and Sean Murphy both nearly scored with shots that hit the posts of the goal.
On the other end of the field, St. Dorothy’s vaunted defense of Nick Castro, Timmy Ebiner, Nathan Orosz, and Thomas Schaiterer, denied all of St. Lawrence’s attempts on goal.
At the end of regulation time, the score remained 0-0. The tie score sent the game into a tie-breaker of penalty kicks. Both teams were given 5 shots against the goalie of the opposing team. he ball was set down 12 yards from the goal for each shot.
Timmy Ebiner of St. Dorothy went first and deftly kicked the ball into the corner of the net for the first goal. St. Lawrence matched it with their own goal. Sean Murphy connected for the second St. Dorothy goal but St. Lawrence again responded with their own goal.
Both teams missed their third shot but St. Dorothy’s Thomas Schaiterer’s shot found the back of the net for the third goal for the boys from Glendora. St. Lawrence’s next shot was heading for the corner of the net but St. Dorothy goalie Nathan Orosz made a diving stop and kept it out of the goal. The diving stop would prove to be the difference in the game as both teams’ last attempts were misses.
St. Dorothy won the championship game on penalty kicks, 3-2, winning the first Catholic Youth Organization Boys’ Soccer Championship for the St. Dorothy Boys Soccer Team.
