Press Box: Citrus, Local High School Sports Results

Citrus Golf anticipates conference, while softball and baseball continue to roll. Also, action from Glendora and St. Lucy's baseball and softball teams.

Citrus softball- Citrus opened a five-game home stretch with a 10-2 six inning win over College of the Canyons on Tuesday afternoon. Citrus sophomore Rebecca Lopez went 3 for 4 with a pair of RBI’s, while sophomore Tamara Robles was 2 for 3 with a run. Sophomore starting pitcher Destinee Quinn went four solid innings giving up just four hits and two runs helping the Owls mercy the Cougars. The Owls followed this up with a double header sweep of Glendale College on Thursday where Kimberly Lopez helped the Owls to a 6-1 win in the first game. Quinn improved to 13-3 with a 9-1 win in the second game. The Owls didn’t fare as well on Saturday in a doubleheader loss to Bakersfield College dropping both games 1-0 and 7-3.

Citrus Baseball- The Owls’ (15-17, 10-9) opened the week on Tuesday with a road win as Luis Hernandez stole home in the top of the 10th inning, scoring the winning run in Citrus’ 3-2 victory over host Bakersfield College. The Owls next suffered an 8-1 home loss to Canyons on Thursday and a 3-2 loss on the road on Saturday.

Citrus Men’s Golf – The Owls shook off a forgettable performance last week at the Western State Conference Neutral Site Event as they rebounded Monday afternoon to capture third place at the WSC Event hosted by Bakersfield College. Freshman Jacob Rodriguez, along with fellow freshmen Darren Foster and Kent Wiese recorded five over par 77 scores as Citrus shot a combined team score of 384 to finish behind Glendale and Canyons. The Owls next travel to Oakmont Country Club tomorrow morning for another conference event hosted by Glendale College in anticipation of the conference championships on April 25.

In Glendora High School Baseball news: The defending CIF Champion Tartans (10-5-1, 5-2) opened up the week on the road on Wednesday with a 7-0 loss to Baseline League rival Los Osos. where they found themselves down 4-2. The Tartans battled back and won the game in front of their home crowd 5-4 in dramatic fashion in the final inning with a 3-run homerun blast from senior Nick Cooksey.

Despite the win on Friday, Glendora Coach Dan Henley said the Tartans still needed to improve.

 “We have to work at all phases of the game, we have to pitch , we have to play catch, we have to hit, we have to be more consistent with our approach at the plate, we were shut out on Wednesday, said Henley adding, “The approach was better (on Friday) and obviously we hung around and we got the last hit.”

In Glendora softball news: Following a 5-3 home loss to Alta Loma on Monday, the Tartans (10-6, 3-3) posted back to back wins to get back in the Baseline League title hunt. Glendora went on the road Tuesday for a league game against Los Osos and came away with an 11-4 win, then returned home and recorded a 3-2 win over league leading Etiwanda. Up next is another home game today against upland at 3:15 p.m.   

 In St Lucy’s Softball news: The Regents (7-7, 3-4) will try to improve on their Sierra League record in a match-up at home against league leading Chino Hills tomorrow. , the Huskies embarrassed the Regents in a 10-0 loss at Big League Dreams, but the Regents have improved their play since then with a pair of wins over league rivals Claremont and South Hills.
