Press Box: A New Tartan Football Coach & High School Baseball, Softball Updates

Glendora High School highlights another busy week of sports with the announcement of a new head coach in football and a tight finish for baseball in the Baseline.

In Football News: Glendora High School has a new head football coach. According to a report in the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, former Northview High School coach Todd Quinsey was named the successor to Mark Pasquarella, who resigned earlier this year after eight years as head coach of the Tartans’ football program.

Lee Spengler, Athletic Director at Glendora High School said via e-mail principal Paul Lopez was still in negotiations late last week, and that more details about any changes to the program would be forthcoming. The Tartans will move forward this season following the graduation of their star quarterback Chad Jeffries, who will play for the San Diego State Aztecs in the fall.

Glendora High School Baseball:  The Tartans (13-6-1, 8-3) suffered only their third league loss of the season on Thursday as they dropped a close game 8-7 at Rancho Cucamonga. Despite the loss, Glendora still holds a one game lead over Los Osos, with four games left to play. This is because the Tartans beat the Cougars earlier in the week.

Glendora Softball News: The Tartans suffered a setback in their only home game scheduled this week, a 4-0 loss to visiting Los Osos.

“This loss is huge,” said Glendora coach Reese Mitchell. “We went into the game a game back of second place with two teams (Los Osos, Upland) and we had a chance to pull a tie-breaker her and get back up in there, now we’re really scrambling and now we really need help.”

Mitchell acknowledged that despite his team giving up four runs in the first inning of play, senior pitcher Carly Argyle had another solid outing for the Tartans.

“It kinda takes the wind right out of your sails, early on we just didn’t muster anything offensively,” said Mitchell, adding, “She (Argyle) was nails, after the first inning she gave up one hit the rest of the way, they only hit one ball hard the rest of the way, unfortunately you cant get that first inning back.

"It’s been a tough year for us, offensively we struggled a little bit, defensively we’ve had some great games and we’ve struggled there too. Pitching has been pretty solid, but when you give up four and you don’t score, you can’t win.

"You gotta come and play with a passion and play hard,” said Mitchell.

The Tartans will try to correct their offensive woes in a game against league leading Etiwanda tomorrow at 3:15 p.m.

St Lucy’s Softball- Danielle O’Toole pitched a complete game for the Regents (10-11, 5-6) and helped St. Lucy’s complete a two game sweep of the Charter Oak Chargers. St. Lucy’s scored three runs on six hits and that was enough offensive fire power to best a Charter Oak team for a second straight game on Tuesday by a 3-1 score. The win placed the Regents just one game back of Ayala for third place in the Sierra League standings. The two teams will face-off tomorrow afternoon in a home game scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

Citrus Baseball- The Owls (18-18, 12-9) started the week on Tuesday by beating L.A. Pierce at home, thereby pulling to within a game of the first place Brahmas who were ranked No. 8 in Southern California coming into the game. Freshman Richard Perry (7-3) had eight solid innings on the hill for the Owls, striking out six batters and surrendering just five hits, four walks and two earned runs while freshman Shane Fraijo belted his 7th homerun of the season. In the rematch at Pierce College on Thursday, the Owls scored 12 runs on 15 hits, thereby keeping Citrus’ Conference Championship and playoff hopes alive with a 12-2 victory.

Citrus Softball- After waiting a week for post-season seedings, the Owls (22-13, 14-4) learned they will have to travel to Cypress College to take on the No.2 seeded Chargers this coming weekend. The Owls, who qualified for the 2011 CCCAA Southern California Playoffs by virtue of their second place finish, have a tough task facing off against the defending state champs. The best two out of three series will get underway on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Cypress College. Game two will be played at 12 p.m. on Sunday with game three following game two if necessary.
