Glendora, St Lucy's Ousted from Postseason Play

Eastside upsets Glendora 72-65, while St. Lucys fall to La Cananda 52-40

GLENDORA – The Glendora High School boys’ basketball team had its playoff hopes abruptly end, falling to the Eastside Lions 72-65 in overtime Wednesday night in a first round matchup.

“They played really well, we didn’t play well,” Glendora head coach Mike LeDuc said. “It’s disappointing when we do not play well at the end of the season.”

Despite starting out slowly, Glendora behind the hot shooting of Kyle Gordon would lead after the first quarter 18-16. Gordon would score all of the points in the quarter, going 6 of 13 from behind the arc.

Gordon would have one more chance to win the game in regulation, but his 3-pointer would not find the mark.

“We had Nick Coletta inside and Kyle (Gordon) outside. They passed it to Kyle,” LeDuc said. “Kyle had an open shot. It just missed.”

Coletta, who averages 24.1 points per game was quiet in the first quarter, but then woke up the last three quarters and overtime to finish with a game-high 26 points.  Gordon tallied 23 points, while CJ Edwards hit two of three 3-pointers to finish with six points.

Randy Hariston led the Lions with 16 points and three rebounds. Greg Polee and Stephen Magee each tallied 11 points while Bryon Maddox had eight points, all of which were in the deciding overtime period where Eastside outscored Glendora 12-5.

Maddox made all five of his free throws down the stretch to help seal the victory.

“Give credit to them.  They did a great job,” LeDuc said.  “We played tentative, hesitant, and we didn’t take advantage of opportunities that we had.”

Glendora finishes ends the season at 21-7.

The St. Lucy’s girls’ basketball team met the same fate, as they too failed to advance into the second round of the playoffs.

La Canada used a 12-4 run in the first quarter to defeat St. Lucy’s 52-40 Thursday night at St. Lucy’s gym.

Despite a slow start, Senior Nicole Zugasti finished with 13 points, four rebounds and three blocked shots.

“They could have had their hands full with Nicole (Zugasti) had she been able to finish,” St. Lucy’s coach Mando Lanier said.  “She just didn’t finish.”

Savannah Selby tallied 10 points while Mary Serafin added eight points and a blocked shot.

Lanier, however know that in spite of its 7-19 record, that La Canada was just as a formidable opponent as anyone else.

“I told the girls that this was a winnable game,” he said.  “But this is the playoffs so you can also lose the game.”
