Whiz Kid: Matthew Wowor

Essay winner Matthew Wowor wins tickets to see the Lakers and gets to meet one himself.

Name and Organization: Matthew Wowor, a seventh-grader at Sandburg Middle School.

Accomplishmnet: Wowor was selected as a contest winner in the 2011 Lakers School of Champions Art and Essay Contest. Matthew was honored at an Awards Luncheon hosted by the Los Angeles Times on March 30. The Los Angeles Lakers, the Lakers Youth Foundation and Anthem Blue Cross Foundation sponsored the event. His prizes include two tickets to a Lakers game on April 10th, a LA Lakers Gift Bag, a School of Champions T-Shirt and a $100 cash prize.

Matthew competed in an art and essay contest against 414 other students in public or private schools throughout Southern California. He was awarded first place in the essay contest for seventh graders. The topic that he wrote on was: Without a commitment to a healthy, active lifestyle, Lakers superstars like Pau Gasol and Kobe Bryant wouldn’t be where they are today.

Key to awesomeness: Matthew stated that his three healthy habits are to study hard, wake up early, and exercise. “These three healthy habits are going to help me with my three goals which are to get to and finish college, be fit and get a great career.”
