Teens Battle it Out in Literary Trivia Bowl

Glendora students vie for the top prize in the 5th annual Battle of the Books.

A crowd filled Glendora Library’s Bidwell Forum to watch Glendora students vie for first place in the 5th annual Battle of Books Oct. 11.

The literary trivia bowl for teens went through 23 rounds of questions from three pre-selected books – Midnight Magic by Avi, Peter Pan in Scarlet by Geraldine McCaughrean and Theodore Boone: Kid Lawyer by John Grisham – with each question becoming more difficult after each round.

In the end the team of Book Battlers 4 – Sandburg Middle School students Troy Hagemeyer and Hank Woodington, and Glendora High School sophomore Allie Woodlington – reigned supreme.

The second place finishers were Oh Know you Didn’t, made up of Sandburg Middle School student Katie Buerf, Glendora High School freshman Sibone Iopollo, and Royal Oak Middle School student Anna Wilson.

A committee of parents, educators, and volunteers worked for months ahead of time to develop more than 200 questions for the competition.

The participants represented students from across Glendora in grades 6 – 12: Edgewood School, Glendora High School, Goddard Middle School, Ramona Middle School, Royal Oak Intermediate School, Sandburg Middle School, Suzanne Middle School, Walnut High School and various home school groups.

The event was sponsored by the Glendora Rotary Club and the Friends Foundation.

Go, go GPD. It is nice to be appreciated, but even better when someone acknowledges it.
