Officials Celebrate Child Development Program

Program would help students interested in the field continue a 13th year at Charter Oak.

Students, staff, faculty and administrators from Charter Oak Unified and the East San Gabriel Valley Regional Occupation and Technical Center gathered to cut the ribbon at the new child development program offered at Sunflower Alternative Schools.

The East San Gabriel Valley Regional Occupation Program and Technical Center designed a 13th-year program for the Charter Oak Unified School District. The goal is to have high school students begin taking career technical education classes while still in school, officials said.

Students would be able to continue their education on the same campus in a compressed timeframe to earn their vocational degree, said Ethel Fimbres, director of post secondary at the East San Gabriel Valley ROP/TC.

"Getting jobs is important. The bottom line is we want to get you employed," said Laurel Adler, superintendent of the East San Gabriel Valley ROP/TC.

"This s a great opportunity for Charter Oak to have this program. This is our next step of a year 13 to get those ready for a career in child development," said Mike Hendricks, superintendent of the Charter Oak Unified School District.

Other guests in attendance included Chris Dennis, assistant superintendent of the Baldwin Park Unified School District, Covina Mayor Walter Allen and Sunflower Principal Lisa Raigosa.
