Glendora Graduation Rates Better Than State, County Average

Latest results from the California Department of Education show Glendora and Charter Oak high schools posting high graduation rates.

Glendora students exceed the state and county average in high school graduation rates, according to results released by the California Department of Education Thursday.

About 92 percent of Glendora Unified students and 88.9 percent of students in the Charter Oak Unified School District graduated in 2010.

Statewide, nearly three out of four students who started high school in 2006 graduated with their class in 2010. About 18 percent of California students dropped out of high school.

The scores also showed marked improvement in the achievement gap between Hispanic, African American, or English learners and their peers.

This year, the results were based on cohort information collected about individual students using the California Longitudinal Pupil Achievement Data System.

"For far too long, the discussion about graduation and dropout rates has revolved around how the results were obtained. Now, we can focus on the much more important issue of how to raise the number of graduates and lower the number of dropouts," State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson said in a press statement.

Not included in the graduation and dropout rates are the 7.4 percent of students are either still in enrolled in school, non-diploma special-education students and those who passed the General Education Development Test.
