Cross-Country Meet Give Kids Chance to Compete

Annual event brings children, parents together in district-wide event.

Fourth and 5th grade students throughout Glendora Unified amassed at Wednesday to compete in the Elementary Cross Country Meet.

This is the 10th annual event, said creator Robert Clark, who oversees the elementary physical education program.

"It's a great sport to introduce kids to," Clark said. "It's just another opportunity to get kids involved in the sport and get them ready for middle school and then, possibly, high school cross country."

The event brings Glendora Unified elementary students from the 4th and 5th grades together.

This year's event drew nearly 300 participants, according to Clark, one of the highest attendance figures the meet has seen. The average is anywhere from 170 to 200 students.

Students ran a course that included the running track at Sandburg Middle School Park and the baseball fields just below the track.

The top three schools receive medals for their achievements, while fourth through 10th place finishers get ribbons.

Every student athlete receives a certificate for participating.

The P.E. program raised $340 in the quarter drive, where donors literally donate quarters to help the program purchase necessary items, Clark said.

Derrell Holmes, father of a 4th grader, said this was his daughter's firs time participating in the event.

"She was very excited to be a part of the event," Holmes said. He added that his daughter has a great affinity for basketball and soccer, so now she can choose which post she would want to pursue more.

"It's very important. It gives them [kids] something to do," Holmes said.

The school with the lowest point totals received an overall team trophy.

Cullen finish in third place with 120 points. Sutherland was second with 112 and Sellers finished first with 85 total points.
