Charter Oak Unified Comments To Mitch Stein Settlement

The Superintendent of the Charter Oak Unified School District has released an official statement regarding the settlement with former assistant water polo coach Mitch Stein.

The statement was released in response to the article published Nov. 18 in Glendora Patch.

The statement reads:

Charter Oak Unified School District reached a settlement on the Mitch Stein matter. Stein, a former assistant water polo coach at Charter Oak High School, had previously alleged discrimination against the District, but the case never advanced to trial.

The basic terms of the settlement provided a one-time payment to Mr. Stein’s legal counsel used to pay for a portion of Mr. Stein’s legal costs.  The settlement did not involve any compensation paid directly to Mr. Stein.

The District will continue to enforce no-exception diversity policies and to provide diversity training for all district employees as done in the past. "This District always has, and always will, be 100% committed to upholding an educational and workplace environment that embraces diversity,” said Dr. Mike Hendricks, District Superintendent. “We make no exceptions to that commitment.”

The settlement agreement between the parties closed an employment dispute that centered on whether the District acted appropriately in dismissing Stein from a walk-on coaching position for not meeting the “higher standard” requirement of its teachers and coaches.

“The most universal quality of people and communities is diversity, and we work hard every day to uphold that principle,” said Superintendent Hendricks.
