The battle over same-sex marriages continues as a federal appeals court on Tuesday declared Proposition 8, the voter-approved ban on same-sex marriages, unconstitutional. A likely appeal is headed to the U.S Supreme Court for consideration.
The three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 2-1 in favor of a 2010 ruling by a lower court judge, who declared Proposition 8 was a violation of the civil rights of gays and lesbians.
Proposition 8 -- which added to the California Constitution that only marriage between a man and a woman is valid in California-- collected 52 percent of the votes in the November 2008 election.
