State Supreme Court Rejects Review for Drug-Related Murder

A Supreme Court refuses to review the conviction of Zachary Flanders for the death and robbery of Ronson Edgerly during a drug buy in Glendora.

The California Supreme Court rejected a request to review the case of Zachary Flanders, a man convicted for the 2009 slaying and robbery of Ronson Edgerly during a marijuana buy in Glendora.

Flanders, 21, met with 20-year-old Edgerly during a marijuana party on April 20, 2009 to purchase a quarter-pound of marijuana worth $1,200.

Prosecutors say Flanders grabbed the drugs and shot Edgerly during a struggle. Flanders dropped the drugs before fleeing the scene.

In June, a three-justice panel from the state’s 2nd District Court of Appeal ruled that the evidence supported the jury’s finding that the shooting death of Edgerly occurred during a robbery. The appellate court also rejected Flanders’ claim that his April 2010 sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole was cruel and unusual punishment.

Flanders had been convicted of robbing another man in La Verne three weeks prior to Edgerly’s murder.
