Redistricting Commission Approves Final Maps

New boundaries leaves speculation of legal challenges and future candidate showdowns.

Redistricting maps were given final approval by a 14-member citizens panel Monday, leaving portions of Glendora divided at the congressional level.

The approved maps will be used the in next decade in elections for legislative seats, but with gerrymandering lines and divided communities, some speculate the maps adopted by the Citizens Redistricting Commission may be see a challenge in court or on a voter ballot.

Republicans, including supporters of Rep. David Dreier who currently represents Glendora in the 26th Congressional District, have said the maps fail to group similar communities together, giving an edge to Democrat candidates.

There has been talk of legal challenge over the approved maps, however, the likelihood of a courtroom challenge is slim, said California Republican Party spokesman Mark Standriff to the Los Angeles Times.

The final maps leaves the majority of Glendora – the area above the 210 freeway— in the newly created 27th Congressional district with cities such as Claremont, Sierra Madre, Altadena, Pasadena, San Marino, Arcadia, Temple City, Monterey Park, Rosemead, Alhambra, as well as the vast San Gabriel Mountains Wilderness area. This puts Glendora—which has historically voted Republican—with predominantly Democrat communities.
