Primary Election 2012: What You Need to Know

Here is your quick guide as you head to the polls today.

Today – Tuesday, June 5 – is the Presidential Primary Election. In addition to naming parties' presidential candidates, 4.5 million registered LA County voters will have the opportunity to head to the polls to vote on various local races. In Glendora, voters will decide on representatives for Senate, Congressional and Assembly seats, as well as two state propositions. to become Los Angeles County's top prosecutor. Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael Antonovich, incumbent in the 5th District, faces a challenge from businessman Raj Pal Kahlon.

The election will mark the first major test of the state's "top two" primary system approved by California voters in 2010. Under the system, only the top two vote-getters, regardless of political party, will advance to a Nov. 6 runoff. The system does not apply to local, presidential or central committee races.
