Obama Appoints Long-Time Glendoran to Key Admin. Post

Resident and CEO of the largest community development organization in the US named to post in the United States Treasury, his second Presidential appointment.

A 20-year resident of Glendora was recently appointed by President Barack Obama to an administrative post in the United States Treasury.

David Lizárraga was appointed as a member of the Community Development Advisory Board, April 2. With his new role, Lizárraga will help advise the Community Development Financial Institutions Fund on its own policies regarding the activities of the account, according to a press release.

The CDFI Fund helps low-income communities throughout the US by allowing access to resources while promoting economic growth.

This is Lizárraga's second Presidential appointment position, having served under former President Jimmy Carter in the United States Neighborhood Commission in 1977. Lizárraga also served as a gubernatorial appointee on several state commissions.

Over the years, Lizárraga has been honored with numerous awards for his philanthropic endeavors, with such awards as Entrepreneur of the Year Award from Entrepreneur Magazine; Minority Business Advocate of the Year from the U.S. Small Business Administration and MBDA; the NAACP Thurgood Marshall Award; and the Spirit of Life Award from the City of Hope. Lizárraga also received an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from California State University Los Angeles.

Lizárraga was also chairman of the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and still serves on the board of directors.

“I am grateful that [this] impressive individual [has] chosen to dedicate [his] talent to serving the American people at this important time for our country. I look forward to working with [him] in the months and years ahead,” said Obama in a press release.

Lizárraga joined The East Los Angeles Community Union in 1973 and has been CEO for nearly 35 years. The LA-based non-profit is reportedly one of the largest community development corporations in the country, focusing more than $600 million in funding to help provide a better life for young people, veterans, families and senior citizens who live in the community it serves.

Through its other numerous organizations, TELACU has also helped establish thousands of permanent jobs, while developing and managing over 5 million square feet of space in urban communities under TELACU Construction Management and has helped create jobs.

Lizárraga is also the Chairman and Founder of the TELACU Education Foundation, which provides financial aid to hundreds of, middle school, high school and college students in California, Illinois, Texas and New York.
