New Census Data Reveals Clearer Picture of Households, Hispanics

Census data released Thursday shows the Mexican community surging in Glendora, as well as the city's aging homeowners.

New Census data released Thursday revealed further information on Glendora’s aging residents and its growing Hispanic population.

Being completely built out, nearly all Census figures for Glendora remained virtually the same since 2000.

Mexicans made up the largest Hispanic community in Glendora at 12,151 people, or 24.3 percent of that Census population. This reflects an increase from 15.9 percent in 2000.

Ten years ago, Asians numbered 3,064 at 6.2 percent, with the largest group being Filipinos at 1,049 people. By 2010, the Asian population had grown only slightly to 8 percent, with Filipinos again making up the largest portion, followed by Chinese and Asian Indian.

The number of owner-occupied households also remained steady with 12,389 owners in 2010. In 2000, the number of owner-occupied households was 12,376, or 73.6 percent. Renter-occupied households also remained nearly the same with 4,443, or 26.4 percent of the households.

As in the 2000 Census, two-person households made up the majority of households, numbering 32 percent in 2010.

However, is evident in the changing average age of homeowners. The largest age group of homeowners has increased to 65 years and over, making up 28.1 percent. In 2000, the largest group had been the 45 to 53 years age group, making up 23.7 percent.

Individuals ages 35 to 44 years old again made up the largest portion of renters at 23.6 percent in 2010, however, down from 27.6 percent in 2000.
