Judy Chu Announces Candidacy in Proposed New District

The incumbent Monterey Park congresswoman officially announced Friday that she will run in the proposed 27th Congressional District, which includes Glendora.

Rep. Judy Chu, D-Monterey Park, announced Friday she will run for office in 2012 in the proposed 27th Congressional District, which includes Glendora.

The by the state's redistricting commission, and a vote to give it final approval will take place on August 15.  The districts will not change before then and will receive a simple up or down vote, though there also have been groups talking about filing a lawsuit over the plan.

Chu, of Monterey Park, resides in the district.  She has been in Congress since 2009 and formerly served in the Monterey Park City Council, California State Assembly and Board of Equalization.

The redistricting process would effectively split her district with Monterey Park and parts of South San Gabriel and Rosemead in both her old district and the new one, and El Monte, Baldwin Park, Duarte, Irwindale, Covina, West Covina and Azusa moving to a new East San Gabriel Valley district.

The new 27th district pushes south from Altadena through Pasadena down to the 60 Freeway and includes South Pasadena, San Marino, Rosemead, Arcadia, Monterey Park and San Gabriel.  It also would have some foothill cities to the east, including Glendora, and parts of Monrovia and Claremont.

In the press release announcing her candidacy, Chu touts her implementation of the Jobs NOW program, which uses federal stimulus funds to subsidize job create, and for her votes on a "landmark college affordability bill."

I don't think she knows our town very well, and her policies are not a good fit. I'd hope Glendora's votes are put to better use by electing a hometown hero into that seat. There's lots of young and eager candidates for that position just waiting to be given the chance.

Judy Chu has my vote as well! She works hard for the people in her district and she really cares. Me and my family support her always!

Judy Chu, like most on the far left, have helped destroy the fiscal soundness of the country. She's a career politician who loves Obama and will continue to attempt to spend us into bankruptcy. No thanks.

Welcome Rep. Chu! It's about time that a friend of working people represent this area. Rep. Chu will be standing up for working class as opposed to the pigs at the trough greed of the right like Dreier. Good riddance DD.
