Glendora City Officials Applaud Budget Veto

City releases statement calling the budget "smoke and mirrors."

Glendora city officials breathed a sigh of relief as Gov. Jerry Brown vetoed the state budget lawmakers attempted to pass on Wednesday, calling the draft  “neither legal nor sustainable.”

Mayor Doug Tessitor issued a statement Friday morning, calling the budget seriously flawed, and aligned the city with Assemblymember Tim Donnelly and Sen. Bob Huff in their opposition to the budget.

“Those voting for the budget reverted to more borrowing, using smoke and mirrors and approving tax increases that were not consistent with the law,” said Tessitor in a prepared statement. “Californians deserve to have their legislators make sound fiscal decisions and avoid further harm to our fragile economy by deficit spending and gimmicks that have gotten us to this point to begin with.”

While the city has spoken out against the governor’s plans to bridge the massive state deficit through theand the , the city council commended Brown in vetoing the budget.

“…His veto forces State leaders to go back and create a sound budget. He is correct that gimmicks are over and we cannot kick the can down the road any longer,” said Tessitor.

The city has passed resolutions opposing the governor’s plan to end redevelopment agencies and the proposed realignment.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonovich, who represents Glendora in the Fifth District, has also opposed the governor’s realignment plan.

““Shifting the state’s budget problems to local government and then offering to take them back through contracting is an illusion from a magician’s bag of tricks. Clearly, shifting these programs is not cost-neutral -- otherwise why shift them at all?,” said Antonovich.

City officials urged lawmakers to make critical budget decisions that are both legal and sustainable.
