Democrats Make Last-Minute Attempt to Avert Sequester Cuts

Local representatives are calling on Republicans to avoid cuts they say will dramatically impact the low income and middle class in California.

As California faces another budget crisis when sequestration is expected to go into effect, local Democrat government representatives are urging House Republicans to take action in creating a balanced plan that would avert massive cuts.

Rep. Judy Chu of the 27th District said California will suffer drastic cuts, including services for children, seniors, small businesses, and military men and women.

“There is no other way to describe sequestration than a self inflicted wound to our economy, our credibility, and the American people,” said Chu in a written statement. “These cuts will take food from the mouths of hungry children and first responders off our streets. No corner of the country will be untouched by their impact, and this report shows that is particularly true for California.”

Chu called on Republicans to “do the right thing and join Democrats in seeking a responsible way to address our debt.”

But that might be a hard sell for tax-weary Republicans.  Republicans, including House Speaker John A. Boehner of Ohio and Republican Minority Leader Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky don’t appear to give in to tax increases before the March 1 deadline, according to the Washington Post.

Republicans believe Democrats are doing their best to create public anxiety over sequestration cuts to pressure Republicans into bending from their no-tax stance.

McConnell told the Washington Post:

“With a $16.6 trillion national debt, and a promise to the American people to address it, one thing is perfectly clear: We will cut Washington spending. We can either secure those reductions more intelligently, or we can do it the president’s way with across-the board cuts. But one thing Americans simply will not accept is another tax increase to replace spending reductions we already agreed to.”

Some of the highlighted cuts in the Democratic campaign include:

  • 87.6 million in funding for primary and secondary education, which could layoff up to 1,210 teacher aide jobs. Head Start and Early Head Start programs could also be at risk.
  • U.S. Customs and Border Protection would have to layoff more than 7,000 officers and agents. The Department of Justice would also be forced lay off approximately 1,000 federal agents and 1,300 Bureau of Prisons correctional officers.
  • $12.4 million in environmental funding for clean water and air quality and $2.6 million in funds to cover responses to natural disasters, infectious diseases and chemical, biological and nuclear events. Another $12.4 million can be cut to substance abuse programs.
  • Cuts to nutritional assistance for seniors, and medical research grants for diseases such as cancer, diabetes and Alzheimer’s.
  • Around 9,600 fewer low income students in California would receive college financial aid and around 3,690 fewer students will get work-study jobs
  • $1.6 million cut to public safety and law enforcement funds.

Still, Democrats believe sequestration will only put more burden on the low income and middle class while the rich enjoy more tax breaks.

“Hardworking people from my district have lost their jobs, and we need to ensure critical services that support them and their families will not be cut. We must reduce spending, but forcing the middle class to bear the burden is not the solution,” said Rep. Grace Napolitano of the 32nd District. “Ending tax breaks for millionaires and corporations will ensure that they also pay their fair share.”

Rep. Judy Chu represents the 27th Congressional District, including Glendora, Arcadia, Claremont, Monrovia, Pasadena, South Pasadena, and unincorporated Altadena. Rep. Grace Napolitano represents the 32nd Congressional District, including Glendora, Monrovia, Baldwin Park, Azusa, La Verne and San Dimas.

Not again, this is a local news site. Leave the political stuff to other sites. Please this will go on for a long time
LocalGuy March 1, 2013 at 08:51 pm
The senate did submit bills they just didn't pass, the House resolutions were totally on party lines and in no way bipartisan so that wouldn't work. If you have seen the emails you know that no one actually threatened woodward they just told him that he got his facts wrong and they said that he would regret it later on. They didn't say we'll make you regret what you asked him so them bashing him is legit. The guy who sent him the email was correcting him not threatening him so hannity got it wrong, sorry.
LocalGuy March 1, 2013 at 08:53 pm
I can see what you mean
LocalGuy March 1, 2013 at 08:55 pm
The senate democrats rejected the gift of selecting what to cut, Obama wanted it and said he supported the idea but they wouldn't pass
Gayle M. Montgomery March 1, 2013 at 09:02 pm
Thanks, Steve, and Marty I still love you even if you're wrong, LOL.
Gayle M. Montgomery March 1, 2013 at 09:12 pm
Marty, Darling, read the link Steve posted from something I posted prior. But consider the impacts to you and your backyard. Ms. Government worker has to take a furlough and now cannot pay all her bills. She never expected this to happen, and she lived to her means of necessity. Suddenly, she is forced to take days without pay. Some people can miss a day's work and not be in pain, but a lot of people cannot. She cannot pay her bills. Her credit rating goes to hell, and suddenly, she is out of a job because, by the way, she works in defense, and a good credit rating is required. There goes the maintenance on her home, and maybe her home. It becomes a blight to your neighborhood. She cannot afford to shop in your town, and neither can her coworkers. The economy takes a hit, and Mom and Pop Biz see a decrease in revenue. She has to reach out to the government for assistance to feed herself and her kids. She has no health care, so she walks around spewing contagion that could affect you. I know. Not going to affect you. You have a job, or don't, and you don't have to worry about it. Me, I think we're all in this thing together.
By the way, Baby Cakes, you are having a hissy about pressure from the White House? Let's just call it push back for the temper tantrums of the terrible Tea Party Twos. No! NO! No!!! That's all they say, no matter whether or not it's good for them or us.

Oh, good Lord. As a proud Liberal, here, let me fall down at Woodward's feet and beg for a mea culpa. He didn't write the book alone, he wrote it with Bernstein, and it was a damn good book that exposed some real horsefeathers in politics and aided in effect with the toppling in their reporting. Since then, as Woodward has gotten older, his politics have changed, and he got his knickers in a twist because the dude he was talking to at the WH said he was wrong. He changed his tone in the email exchange. Now, to save face, he's harrumphing. Please. The House submitted 2 UNTENABLE resolutions full of dooky stew. Of course they were rejected. I'll make a resolution. Because of the sequester, I'm taking your house. Will that work for you? I don't think so. It is not noble to put forth a resolution that is unpalatable to the majority, and you have to remember, Stamford, that your party lost the federal vote not once but twice, and the California vote, too. The softening of the sky is falling technique is part of the negotiation efforts up til the last minute. Your boys are going to own this one, like it or not. They are also going to own the consequences of this mess. It is ultimately going to cost you the next election just as other shenanigans and intransigence cost you this.

Steve B. "seems believable" . If one reads one opinion article, from a source that is on his side of the aisle, sure it sounds resonable.
Instead of me going point to point, as in the GW which I spent too much time on. let me challange you. Read the articles from the other side of the aisle, especially ones you might think are too slanted, compare facts. The truth will likely fall somewhere in between. Unlike the GW debate, both sides have a strong clear agenda. Here is my visual. Clasp your hand together with your fingers intertwined. That is the whole story. Now seperate your hands keeping your fingers on each hand in the half bent position. What you are left with is fingers on each hand telling part of the story, and they are all crooked. I think this is a systemic problem-both sides-all sides-everyone.

Here's the 2011 GOP Budget they suggested under that shining star, Ayn Rand...er Paul Ryan. You tell me why it was rejected. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/16/us/politics/16congress.html?_r=0
Gayle M. Montgomery March 1, 2013 at 09:53 pm
And here is the summary of the 2012 budget. Tell me why this one was bounced, and for extra credit, who would be the target group most apt to derail it. Hint, I've gotten texts from them to take action still. http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2012/08/11/us/politics/0812-ryan.html

@ gayle - typical lib argument. Because Obama got millions of votes, as did Romney just not as many as Obama, he then gets to rule by divine right. Those who oppose him have no say and therefore should sit back and let POTUS ruin the country with his socialist agenda. LAME argument Gayle seriously...
If Obama was so concerned about the federal workers, why didnt he accept the power to move funds within each budgetary line item to avoid layoffs??? Answer me that one Kreskin...
Buzlightyear aka marty March 1, 2013 at 10:59 pm
Gayle, I don't know why you are explaining what happens when someone loses their job. I must have missed something here.
Bill C. March 1, 2013 at 11:05 pm
Where's the Senate's proposed budget Gayle? Why do you call out only the GOP to cut staff? Obama is a terrible president that blamed Bush for years and now blames The House, nothing is ever his fault but he's the guy in charge as we go nowhere near rebuilding the economy, or don't you want to talk about the God awful growth figures. Housing is doing better for one reason and one reason only, low financing rates and people are buying now not knowing when the free ride is going to stop. As for the poor fed workers not being able to pay their bills, losing their homes, credit ratings going to hell...bs, I'm one of them and I'm fine. People don't learn to budget or unable to read the writing on the wall the past few years are the same ones who put the idiot in office, believing him because it was the cool thing to do. Now as nothing he does works, he blames the right, go figure.
Your scare tactics won't work just like Obama's won't, more nonsense from the left.
Buzlightyear aka marty March 1, 2013 at 11:20 pm
Gayle a response of mine went through while others are still pending. One went through after 10 hours. I have been sequestered.
Bill C. March 1, 2013 at 11:36 pm
Woodward is a registered Democrat who acts independently, that infuriates the far left. I'm going to bet, based on his resume that he's pretty good at digging out the truth and doesn't allow his political affiliations to get in the way, unlike some here.
Buzlightyear aka marty March 2, 2013 at 01:07 am
Steve B
I have to ask, honestly... On the GW debate I had with the author, every point I made was left undebated by him. He seemed to simply run out of gas. I thought perhaps something might be getting through. But on rereading one of his last couple comments where he calls my side murderers, and whores, combined with him calling me complacent in deaths of thousands a day, I am now thinking he is not working with a full deck. What do you think?
Buzlightyear aka marty March 2, 2013 at 05:23 am
Might as well pile on....
Obama releases thousands of alien criminals to your streets, so that he can give 85 billion dollars to the banks!!....EVERY MONTH! Yes, it's a non-sequitur type statement. But I learned it from watching Mr. non-sequitur, Ed Schultz on MSNBC...ROTFLOL.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non_sequitur_(logic) WASHINGTON -- The Homeland Security Department released from its jails more than 2,000 illegal immigrants facing deportation in recent weeks due to looming budget cuts and planned to release 3,000 more during March, The Associated Press has learned. Stamford you are projecting. Sweetie, I am not falling into your trap. Nobody said anything about divine right. You are just unhappy you did not divine the outcome you wanted. Get over it.
Gayle M. Montgomery March 2, 2013 at 07:53 am
Bill the budget, by law, must start with the House. Til the House passes a budget that is acceptable to all, what is the point. The AARP is never going to accept the budget the House proposed. It goes at the elderly and other groups while protecting the wealthy and providing them tax breaks at the expense of the rest of us. As for your opinions of Obama, nothing has changed for you in that regard since we have communicated. No surprises there.
Gayle M. Montgomery March 2, 2013 at 08:04 am
Now, with respect to the budget and no budget from the Senate, the government ccould not have operated had a budget not been passed, and I don't know what news sources you are using, but here is the budget data for 2011. You will note that Speaker Boehner could not control his own party and had to rely on Democrats to get a budget passed. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/15/us/politics/15congress.html Further, this explains the 2012 budget position of the Senate. http://dailycaller.com/2012/02/03/reid-senate-will-not-pass-a-budget-this-year/

Here is the Christian Science Monitor's take on Woodward: "Woodward's never been a liberal. Neither has the man who helped bring down President Nixon ever seemed a conservative. In recent decades he’s been something of an establishmentarian, reflecting the conventional wisdom of Washington insiders with his long, detailed books about policymaking in various administrations.
That means it would be dangerous for the right to anoint him one of their own. Next thing you know he’ll say something that outrages them. During an appearance on NBC’s “Today” show Friday, Woodward was already touting a possible move by Senate Republicans to accept some new tax revenues in a sequester-fix deal. That’s not going to make the House GOP happy." http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/DC-Decoder/Decoder-Wire/2013/0301/Has-the-left-turned-on-Bob-Woodward-video Further, with respect to the regret ballyhoo, they say: "Mr. Sperling says Woodward might “regret” his statements, but does so in a context which makes it appear that it refers to a possible future regret on the part of Woodward that he was factually wrong." They say the media has blown this out of proportion.
Gayle M. Montgomery March 2, 2013 at 08:13 am
And this is not the first time Woodward's work has been discredited. According to Wiki, he spent a great deal of time with GWB and wrote 6 books about that administration. He went on to say: "Woodward believed the Bush administration's claims of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction prior to the war. During an appearance on Larry King Live, he was asked by a telephone caller, "Suppose we go to war and go into Iraq and there are no weapons of mass destruction," Woodward responded "I think the chance of that happening is about zero. There's just too much there." Woodward later admitted his error saying, "I think I dropped the ball here. I should have pushed much, much harder on the skepticism about the reality of WMD; in other words, [I should have] said, 'Hey, look, the evidence is not as strong as they were claiming.'""

SteveB March 2, 2013 at 02:33 pm
Marty, take a look at William Korn's post at 12:39 pm on Thursday, February 21, 2013 in that thread. I am pretty much in agreement with his take, there, as well as in the rest of the thread.
SteveB March 2, 2013 at 02:41 pm
"The truth will likely fall somewhere in between". Now that's something I can agree with. Not quite the take given in your post, now, is it? Impeachment. Seriously.
Bill C. March 2, 2013 at 07:54 pm
The AARP? When did the AARP start deciding what budgets congress would pass, what about the NFL or WWE or the YMCA, seriously the AARP? There you are again shilling for the Democrat dominated Senate who has done nothing Obama's entire tenure and .1% growth is something you're ok with? Obama is a class and race dividing socialist whose policies are doing nothing, not anything Gayle to get the country moving. All your comments mean zero in the face of what this country is experiencing under his incredibly lame leadership. Post any link you want but the bottom line is Obama got his tax increase and now wants more, no surprise there and to defend his failures shows just how little you care about what goes in the pcoket of the middle class. I'm a part of that and where time and again Obama said we wouldn't see one penny in additional taxes he lied and you and your pals are ok with that. Why are you ok with his lies Gayle, when are you going to call him out on then. Oh, and when he said the other day criminals would walk and cases dropped at the federal level because of the sequester, not happening, just another lie to further demonize the right. We are living under the rule of the worst president of modern times and he needs to be obstructed at every wrong turn he takes.
