City To Host Earth Day Festival April 20

Event to consume the City Hall area on Saturday.

Residents can learn about drought-resistant plant alternatives for the home, get up close with some scaly friends, learn about solar power and efficient irrigation at the upcoming Earth Day Festival.

The yearly event takes up most of the exterior of City Hall, Public Library and Plaza and aims to make residents more aware of not only the variety of rare flora this area is home to, but how to be more environmentally conscious.

"The most important thing is to be more sensitive about our impacts on the Earth, the purchases we make affects the entire environment," said Dianne Walter, Glendora planning manager. "There are lots of ways we can learn to live more sustainable and more carefully to protect the Earth."

This will be the eighth Earth Day Festival the city has hosted, Walter said.

Events run all day from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The festival is host to a plethora of workshops and events. The day begins with a bicycle safety rodeo and children's bike ride, where new riders learn the rules of the road, learn bicycle safety and enjoy a ride along a plotted course ending at Finkbiner Park.

The children's ride will be the only bike ride as the city will forego the intermediate and advanced rides held last year.

Other events will include a workshop on increasing awareness of the climate Southern California is home to and the various drought-resistant plants from the area that can be used for landscaping. Residents can also learn about making their home more energy efficient, including the use of solar panels to provide electricity.

Used motor oil and oil filters will be collected as well during the event and residents can stop by to have their sensitive and confidential documents shredded for free.

Children will be treated to an all-day treasure hunt, face painting and more.

All activities are free. For more information, Call (626) 914-8213.
