Assemblyman: Governor Brown made 'the California Driver's License a joke'

Assemblyman Tim Donnelly spoke out against the passing of AB 2189, which allows some undocumented immigrants to obtain a driver's license.

Governor Jerry Brown’s signing of a bill that grants undocumented immigrants an opportunity to receive a driver’s license has made the state less safe and the license system “a joke,” according to Assemblyman Tim Donnelly.

Donnelly (R-Twin Peaks) released his angry statement late Monday following the governor’s signing of AB 2189, a bill authored by Assemblyman Gil Cedillo (D-Los Angeles). Donnelly also represents La Verne and Claremont.

The bill affects several thousand eligible for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, according to reports. The Deferred Action program is for those ages 15 to 31 who can prove they’ve been in the country for the last five years consecutively.

The bill has been controversial. Its critics pointed out potential abuses as licenses are used as official identification. But Cedillo and the bill’s supporters felt it would contribute to road safety by allowing the state to require those undocumented, many which are driving despite not having a license, to take driving tests.

Below is Assemblyman Donnelly full statement:

“Governor Brown just made our state less safe and made the California Driver's License a joke. We have no way of knowing who we will be handing out secure documents to under this new policy. Exacerbating the security threat posed by this flippant and irresponsible legislation, driver's licenses will give people in the state illegally the ability to register to vote.

"Combined with online voter registration, same day voter registration up to and on election day, this is a recipe for massive potential voter fraud.  Now an untold number of 'legal' illegals - those who've been granted a temporary deportation reprieve from President Obama - will be able to drive, travel and even vote in our state with "secure" documents indistinguishable from a citizen's license.

"Every time our laws become inconvenient for people who are here illegally, we create a new program for them, regardless of the consequences for citizens. Given that Californians can now register to vote online with nothing more than a driver's license number, this bill will do irreparable harm, compromising the integrity of our elections. In a society based on free and secure elections, this new bill will outrage every voting citizen and every family who has gone through the steps and waited patiently to become American citizens.”

If it makes them be accountable for their driving actions, I'm all for it. I was intentionally rammed by an illegal immigrant in a pickup truck at a stoplight because when the light turned green the motorcycle in front of me stalled. The guy behind me didn't see that and thought that I just wasn't paying attention. When I reported it to the police and gave them the license plate #, they informed me that there was nothing they could do because the registered owner was an illegal immigrant who was able to get a car registered in his name with his Mexican driver's license. But they could not do anything for me because he was not licensed in the US. INTENTIONALLY RAMMING ME WITH HIS PICKUP TRUCK and causing damage to my car and there's nothing they can do. Absolute bullcrap.

Insurance only follows the registrations of cars, not driver licenses so insurance will not be affected, period.

Wow, now they have a license and so what would the risks of losing that license be by not having too many tickets and accidents. Nothing, they never had one before!

If DMV requireS proof of insurance like an SR22 to get a license this is great news since these guys will now be insured and there will be less fraud and rates will go down for all. If this is just a way to get a normal license without having to show insurance, then THIS IS HORRIBLE AND I WILL HAVE TO AGREE FULLY WITH MR. DONNELLY FOR THE FIRST TIME! Hopefully DMV wont jack this up like they do everything else.

Why would ANYONE expect an illegal immigrant to get insurance on a car that .they're not LEGALLY licensed to drive in the first place....?.... You're talking about people who are operating within the "honor system" of our social contract, and who, by definition of their very (illegal) presence in this country....HAVE NO HONOR...!!!... Gray Davis was tossed out of the Governors mansion for a whole lot less. What will it take it throw Brown out of office.?. Does he need to sell Yosemite to the Chinese govt before people see how bad this guy is for our state.?. Can't SOMEBODY start a recall process to kick this loser to the curb.?.
