What is the process and criteria used to choose members of committees and commissions?  If a call for volunteers is put forward, how is that done and how much time is allotted for recruiting committee and commission members?

For information on applying for boards, committees and commissions go to the city’s web site (www.ci.glendora.ca.us) .  Under the heading Departments & Services, go to the City Clerk heading and then choose “Commissions and Boards”.

There you will find all the information that you would need to identify positions that may be of interest and when they may be open for appointment.

Criteria vary by board or commission; For example, in order to be eligible for appointment to the Business Improvement District one must be a business owner within the district.

Each of the boards has term limits, so the city clerk knows when openings will occur.

The clerk will then advertise for applicants in the San Gabriel Valley Examiner and the City’s Web site.  Openings are also posted on the bulletin boards outside council chambers, in the library and the police department.

Typically the openings are advertised for three weeks.  Depending on the volume of responses the ads can be extended for additional periods of time.

Any and every resident of the City of Glendora is eligible to apply for any opening.  Each applicant will be interviewed in open session by the complete City Council.  Questions about background, pertinent experience, goals, objectives and attitudes will be asked, evaluated and compared with those of other applicants.

The council will then vote in open session until a council majority vote chooses the successful candidate(s).

For those who feel there is insufficient representation from any particular area of the city, it must be pointed out that we are dependent on volunteers to apply.  Every person who applies will be interviewed and given an equal opportunity to win the selection.

The best prepared and the most qualified will have the best chance to be appointed.  People who have a record of involvement in other community activities, charities, churches, service clubs, etc. will have a leg up.
