Antonovich Blasts U.S. Court Decision on Same-Sex Marriages

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Tuesday 2-1 in favor of a 2010 ruling by a lower court judge, who declared Proposition 8 was a violation of the civil rights of gays and lesbians.

“Once again, activist judges with a political correctness agenda have disenfranchised the people who voted overwhelmingly to oppose same-sex marriage in California -- over 4.5 million Californians in 2000, and over 7 million in 2008,” Antonovich said in a press statement. “This ruling needs to be appealed to the United States Supreme Court.”       

Proposition 8 passed in the November 2008 election with 52 percent of the vote.

Other political leaders weighed in on the decision.

Republican presidential candidate New Gingrich called the decision an example of an “out of control judiciary.”

Gov. Jerry Brown issued a statement saying the court "has rendered a powerful affirmation of the right of same-sex couples to marry. I applaud the wisdom and courage of this decision."
