Update: 1 Killed in Vehicle Crash That Sparked Fire in Angeles National Forest

At least one person was airlifted to the hospital and a second person was killed in a vehicle crash that caused a small wildfire near Glendora Ridge Road.

Update, 8:20 a.m.

A person was killed today and another was seriously injured in a vehicle crash that sparked a small wildfire in the Angeles Crest area of the Angeles National Forest, authorities said.

The crash was reported around 12:35 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. The car went 300 to 500 feet over the side of the road, CHP Officer Robert Ruiz told a news photographer at the scene.

The brush fire burned less than an acre in the area of Glendora Ridge Road and Mt. Baldy Road before it was contained around 2:40 a.m., according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Water drops were made on a few remaining hot spots over the next few hours, and the fire did not spread, the fire department reported.

The survivor -- a female who said she was in the car with a male driver when it crashed -- crawled from the wreckage and was hoisted into a helicopter and flown to a hospital for treatment, Ruiz said. She had a lacerated thigh and a broken arm, he said.

The body was discovered after daybreak, the county fire department reported. The car was extensively damaged by fire. The circumstances of the crash were under investigation.

Baldy Road before it was put out around 2:40 a.m., said Los Angeles County Fire Department supervising dispatcher Michael Pittman.  Water drops were still being made on a few remaining hot spots around 5:45 a.m., said county fire supervising dispatcher Robert Diaz.

The injured victim, a female who said she was in the car with a male driver when it crashed, crawled from the wreckage and was hoisted to the road surface via helicopter and then flown to a hospital for treatment, Ruiz said. She had a lacerated thigh and a broken arm, he said.

The car was extensively damaged by fire and firefighters were unable to immediately reach it to determine if the driver was still inside, Pittman said.
