Suspect Killed in Ralphs Shooting Linked to Subway Robbery

The Subway restaurant was robbed Thursday at gunpoint by a man matching Luis Varela, Jr.'s description.

Glendora police confirmed the suspect killed in Saturday’s shootout with police was also suspected of robbing a Subway restaurant at gunpoint Thursday.

Before Saturday’s shooting at , Luis Varela, Jr., 29, had been suspected of robbing a Kohl’s store at Kohl’s 1225 S. Lone Hill Ave.

Saturday at 4:05 p.m., Glendora Police responded to an armed robbery call at. The suspect,  then described as a male Hispanic around 30 years of age, had gone into the store and displayed a hand gun while demanding cash from an employee at the register.

The suspect fled with an unknown amount of cash before police arrived.

According to reports, a Glendora police officer later tried to detain Varela at Ralphs, 655 S. Grand Ave., when the suspect fled into the busy grocery store, opening fire at the officer. The officer returned fire, critically wounding Varela.

Authorities confirmed that Varela died at a hospital Monday morning.

During at , 1311 S. Grand Ave., a man matching the description of Varela, also displayed a handgun to employees and fled with an unknown amount of cash.

Glendora police Lt. Tim Staab said Varela was suspected of committing the crime, along with a bank robbery in Riverside. Varela was also wanted for a parole violation.

No one was injured in both the Subway and Kohl’s incidents.
