An Azusa teen suspected of being the driver of the getaway vehicle in a 7-Eleven beer heist was arrested last week thanks to the help of local residents.
The boy, 16, was arrested Aug. 9 at his parent's home in the 200 block of North Dalton Avenue. The boy was charged with burglary and was found to have a graffiti tool in his possession not related to the initial crime, said Detective Zach Houser of
The teen arrested is suspected of being the driver of the getaway vehicle, a Nissan Altima.
The occurred the night of July 21 at the in the 800 block of West Route 66. The suspect car pulled up the convenience store, a male entered the store, took two 18-packs of beer and ran back to the waiting car, which took off.
A patron in the store attempted to physically stop the suspect with the beer. The patron and his girlfriend then initiated a brief chase into Azusa and got the license plate number of the suspect car.
"When the case came across my desk, I just went with the plate and another detective and I went out and contacted the registered owner and we were able to figure out who it was from there," Houser said.
There was at least one more suspect and possibly a third, but they have not been found.
The teen has since been cited and released to the custody of his parents. The teen will appear in court in the near future and it will be up to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's juvenile division whether charges will be filed, Houser said.
