Small Pole 'Explosion' Knocks Out Power to Nearly 2,000 Customers

The fire was reported on Underhill Drive near Valley Center Ave. Monday morning.

A blown transformer resulted in a power outage for nearly 2,000 SoCal Edison customers Monday morning.

The small “pole explosion” was reported at 9:22 a.m. Monday morning in the 1400 block of Underhill Driveand caused a nearby tree to go up in flames, according to Los Angeles County Fire.

The fire was quickly extinguished, but it left 1,968 customers without power, according to the SoCal Edison website.

The power outage affected Glendora High School where students, faculty and staff were without electricity for nearly an hour. The power was restored at Glendora High by 10:40 a.m.

Glendora High School Principal Paul Lopez said school and district administrators discussed possibly letting students out early if the power would not be restored by the afternoon.

“We were in talks about it, especially with today’s heat,” said Lopez. “But since the issue was resolved, we resumed classes.”

SoCal Edison estimates full restoration for all affected customers by 3:30 p.m.
