Report Reveals Most Crimes Down at Citrus

Annual Safety Report required as part of federal of higher education institutions.

The majority of crimes at Citrus College have decreased over the last three years, according to a recent report.

The details were given as part of the overall Annual Safety Report.

Aggravated assaults fell dramatically from 2008 to 2010 with 12 total in 2008. The next year only four aggravated assaults occurred at Citrus with only two happening in 2010, according to the report.

Vehicle thefts dropped slightly to three last year from seven reported cases in 2009. The year prior, Citrus experienced three vehicle thefts.

Robberies were static across all three years, with one apiece.

Burglaries saw a slight increase in 2011, with five, up from one from 2010. Five burglaries were reported in 2008.

Drug law violations increased steadily, with one in 2009 to five in 2010. There were no reported cases in 2008.

Liquor law violations fell after seeing an increase. In 2010, Citrus reported only three such violations, down from eight in 2009. In 2008, the campus reported four of these crimes.

"We have a greater commitment from the college itself towards campus safety," said Tony Giannone, Campus Safety supervisor.

The campus has also increased the number of safety personnel, adding about six new officers over seven years, Giannone said. He went on to say that the campus previously relied more on student help with security personnel and the Owl Patrol.

"The most important thing is we don't want anyone to be unaware of the services we provide," said Martha NcDonald dean of students. "We're always available."

The report is a legal requirement under the Student Right to Know and Campus Safety Act, otherwise known as the Jeanne Clery Act, which requires disclosure of crime statistics and security policies of postsecondary institutions.
