Preventing Holiday Theft, Burglaries

Glendora PD offers tips on how to safeguard you and your family against common holiday crimes.

With the holiday shopping period officially here, busy people can become vulnerable to theft and other holiday crime. The Glendora Police Department is passing on these safety tips to help everyone enjoy the holiday season:

  • Use the “buddy system” and do your holiday shopping with a friend. Criminals prefer victims who are alone. If you are alone, check to see if the store can provide an escort to your car.
  • When you shop at night, park near the store or mall entrance and in well-traveled and lighted areas.
  • Carry very little cash. Use credit cards or checks whenever possible. Store your wallet in an inner pocket of your clothing. Don’t keep valuables in your back pocket.
  • Don’t advertise your valuable purchases. Place packages in the trunk of your car before your arms become full. In the event you are being watched, move your car to another spot. Thieves watch for shoppers placing valuables in unattended cars.
  • Use caution when approaching your vehicle.  Stay alert and have your keys ready in your hand.  Watch out for anyone loitering near your car.
  • Check the security of your home. A well secured home with a lived in appearance watched by neighbors will be avoided by burglars. Avoid displaying Christmas presents in view of passersby. Add timers to your lamps so that the house will be well lit when you arrive home.
  • Do not leave valuables in your car overnight. Thieves try car door handles to see if you have left the doors unlocked. If your doors are locked but they see something of interest, they will break your car window to get to your valuables.
  • Don’t advertise your new gifts. Crush all containers and boxes before throwing them away. Uncrushed cartons set out with your trash may attract a burglar to your new TV, stereo or other appliances.
  • Do everything necessary you can do to ensure you do not become a victim during this busy holiday season. If you see anything suspicious, call the Glendora Police Department at 626-914-8250 or in an emergency dial 911.
