Older Japanese Cars Top Most Stolen List

Honda and Toyota models from the 1990s are the most stolen cars statewide.

Older model Japanese cars remain high on the list of cars stolen the most statewide.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau recently released “Hot Wheels,” its list of the top 10 most stolen cars in the country.  The report also includes data from individual states.

In 2010, there were 40 cars reported stolen in 2010 in Walnut and 78 in Diamond Bar, according the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department crime statistics.  As of July 5, there have been 14 cars stolen in Walnut and 23 in Diamond Bar so far this year, according to the data.

Honda and Toyota models dominated the list of cars stolen nationwide and in California, a consistent trend since 2000, according to the “Hot Wheels” report. Vehicle thefts are on the decline though.

Preliminary F.B.I. crime figures for 2010 show a 7.2 percent dip in the number of thefts from 2009.  If the numbers hold, 2010 is expected to post the fewest thefts since 1967, according to the report. Experts point to improved technology as one of the reasons for the lower rates.  Of the close to 52,000 Honda Accords stolen in 2010, more than 44,000 were models made in the 1990s.  Less than 5,700 stolen were produced since 2000.
