Officers Come Out in Force For Super Bowl Sunday

The Avoid the 100 DUI Task Force take to the streets to nab drunk drivers.

Anytime there’s an occasion for multitudes of parties, Los Angeles County police officers are on alert for drunk drivers, and Super Bowl Sunday is no exception.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that for about half of the crash fatalities recorded on Super Bowl Sunday 2008, the motorists at fault had blood alcohol levels of .08 or higher.

As part of the Avoid the 100 DUI Task Force, Glendora police joins other Los Angeles county enforcements agencies in rolling out patrol units on the prowl for drunk drivers on the biggest game of the year for football fans.

“Our units will be all over Los Angeles County,” said Wendy Brewer, senior community service officer and Avoid the 100 coordinator. “There won’t be a city in Los Angeles County that won’t be hit.”

Coordinated by the Glendora Police Department, the Avoid the 100 campaign will deploy special roving DUI patrols through the county to nab DUI motorists all day Sunday. Funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety, the task force coordinated campaigns throughout the year, especially during the winter holiday season when 2,406 DUI arrests were made.

This year’s Super Bowl campaign joins the national “Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk” message from the National Football League and several drunk driving prevention organizations in combating alcohol-related accidents and fatalities.

“We want everyone to make the right decision for Super Bowl,” said Glendora Police Chief Rob Castro in a prepared statement. “Having a designated sober driver should be an obvious call in everyone’s play book. Making sure designated sober drivers know how much we appreciate their responsible decision is what will make this year’s celebration extra special – and extra safe.”

Planning on partying this Super Bowl Sunday? Here are some tips from the Avoid the 100 Task Force:

  • Designate a sober driver before heading to the party and leave your car keys at home if you plan to drink.
  •  Add the phone numbers for local cab companies in your cell phone so contacting them is just a press of a button.
  • Avoid drinking too much alcohol too quickly. Eat enough food, take breaks and alternate with non-alcoholic drinks.
  • Always wear your seat belt.
