NRA Issues First Statement on Newtown Shooting

'The NRA is prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again.'

The National Rifle Association has broken its silence following its spell of quiet in the wake of the Dec. 14 shootings in Newtown, Conn.

Tuesday afternoon, the NRA issued this statement:

The National Rifle Association of America is made up of four million moms and dads, sons and daughters - and we were shocked, saddened and heartbroken by the news of the horrific and senseless murders in Newtown.

Out of respect for the families, and as a matter of common decency, we have given time for mourning, prayer and a full investigation of the facts before commenting.

The NRA is prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again.

The NRA is planning to hold a major news conference in the Washington, DC area on Friday, December 21.

Details will be released to the media at the appropriate time.

The statement follows days of speculation that the country may be ready to consider stricter gun control laws. Over the weekend, President Barack Obama signaled a readiness to take up the isssue, and California Sen. Dianne Feinstein said she is prepared to bring back legislation that would ban assault weapons across the country.

What are your thoughts? Which direction should the NRA head?

The NRA solution offerred today was an insult to any thinking, caring person. Putting more "good guys" with guns out there to take care of the "bad guys" is absurd. Here are a few simple questions for all of those that believe assault weapons and multi round clips should be protected under the Second Ammendment. 1. What is the intendend purpose of these weapons? 2. If you were one of the "good guys" like a police officer could you challenge a person with body armour, an assault rifle and multi round clip with your side arm and survive? 3. Would you want your child to attend a school with armed guards? 4. Why should anyone own military weapons? No one is proposing taking away the right to bear arms, only the right to own military style weapons designed for one purpose only, to kill people. By eliminating these weapons our society will be safer and yes free of the ability to mass murder innocent people. By the way would anyone really want to live next door to someone that has an arsenal of assualt weapons and thousands of rounds of ammunition? The next time you see a cop look at his handgun, you will notice they don't have a 30 round clip and they don't strap an M16 around their shoulder!! All assault weapons, mulit round clips, body armour etc MUST be banned and anyone caught with these these items must be sentenced to an automatic prison term.

Well written, David..No responsible or ethical teacher would ever allow a gun in their classroom. Schools, like churches, are places where guns are not appropriate, ever.
