A motorcycle rider who died Wednesday when his bike went off San Gabriel Canyon (39) Road while eluding a California Highway Patrol officer was identified today.
Javier Alvarez-Rivera, 26, of Pico Rivera, was declared dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred near Rincon Redbox Road, according to the CHP and a coroner's spokesman.
Alvarez-Rivera was found about 200 feet off the road, according to the CHP. He had been riding a 2007 Yamaha, which a CHP officer started chasing on area freeways about 12:15 a.m. Wednesday, but Alvarez-Rivera managed to elude him after about 20 minutes.
The motorcycle was reportedly going up to 70 mph on San Gabriel Canyon Road. The body was found by a spotter in a sheriff's helicopter about 7:35 p.m. Wednesday.
Why the CHP officer was trying to stop Alvarez-Rivera was not disclosed.
