Man Dies After Veering 150 Feet Down Roadway Near Claremont

The California Highway Patrol reports the man drifted off Mount Baldy Road and into a retaining wall before sliding down the mountainside.

One person was killed when a vehicle went 150 feet over the side of Mt. Baldy Road in the Angeles Crest area of the Angeles National Forest, authorities said Wednesday.

The crash occurred in the area of Shinn Road near the Los Angeles-San Bernardino county line and was reported just after 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, a Los Angeles County Fire Department supervising dispatcher and the California Highway Patrol said.

"For unknown reasons, [the driver] allowed [his Toyota] to veer to the left until [it] left the roadway," CHP Officer Rodrigo Jimenez reported.  "[The vehicle] proceeded to collide with a three foot concrete retaining wall and a metal light pole."

After hitting both the wall and pole, the vehicle continued "out of control" and down the mountainside embankment before eventually coming to a rest at the bottom, according to Jimenez.
