Man Charged With Attacking West Covina Police Officer

A man who allegedly doused himself with gasoline and bit a West Covina police officer who was trying to handcuff him was charged today with two felony counts.

Juan Carlos Urrutia, 24, of West Covina, pleaded not guilty to one felony count each of assault upon a peace officer and resisting an executive officer.

Urrutia allegedly saturated himself with gasoline, walked into traffic and then tussled with two police officers when they tried to approach him Monday morning. Urrutia then allegedly bit one of the officers trying to put him into handcuffs.

He is due back in court May 28, when a date is scheduled to be set for a hearing to determine if there is enough evidence to require him to stand trial.

If convicted as charged, he faces up to five years and eight months in state prison, according to the District Attorney's Office.
