Little Girl Used in Distraction Burglary on Elderly Resident

An elderly woman and her roommate were robbed of about $1,700 worth of cash, jewels in a brazen burglary yesterday.

A 5 to 6-year-old girl was used by two subjects in a distraction burglary yesterday that left an elderly woman and her roommate robbed of about $1,700 worth in cash and valuables.

The distraction burglary is described as one of the first of its kind in the city that Glendora Police know of.

The burglary took place sometime around 11 a.m. in the 1600 block of S. Suffolk Place. One of the residents, an 89-year-old woman, was home at the time out on the front porch.

The suspects are described as a male white in his 20s and a female white in her 60's.

The woman approached the resident and asked if she was interested in having housework done. The resident declined the offer, but started a conversation with the woman, said Lt. Jamie Caldwell.

The man approached with a young girl, stating the child wasn't feeling well and asked if they could use the bathroom. Caldwell said the resident agreed. Both the man and the girl went inside for about 10 to 20 minutes as the resident continued talking with the woman.

After the man, woman and child left, the resident's roommate arrived sometime later in the evening and noticed that some of her cash was missing, Caldwell said. The 89-year-old then discovered some of her jewelry was also missing.

"When she goes back in the house a little later on, she realizes that she'd been ripped off for about $1,700 worth of cash and jewelry," Caldwell said.
