LA County Police Make 836 DUI Arrests During July Fourth Weekend

During a sobriety checkpoint in Glendora, eight tickets were issued and vehicles were towed, but only one DUI arrest was made.

More than 800 DUI arrests were made across Los Angeles County during the July Fourth holiday weekend.

Law enforcement agencies making up the Avoid the 100 DUI Task force ended the four-day weekend with 836 arrests of individuals driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. However, the final tally may change as several agencies have yet to report results.

Dozens of sobriety checkpoints in Los Angeles County, including one in Glendora were conducted midnight Friday, July 1 to midnight Monday, July 4.

During a DUI checkpoint in the 600 block of Route 66 in Glendora on Friday, July 1, police issued seven driving tickets, eight vehicles were towed because of suspended licenses or expired registrations and one driver was arrested for driving under the influence.

Law enforcement agencies also bulked up their patrol units during the weekend to nab intoxicated drivers in efforts to reduce deaths and injuries from car accidents.

In 2010, 844 DUI arrests were during the three-day weekend.

The next Avoid the 100 anti-DUI effort is an 18-day campaign in August ending Labor Day weekend.

Funding for Avoid the 100 Anti-DUI program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
