Glendora PD Arrest Young Suspect in Theft At Stater Bros.

Eyewitnesses chase 17-year-old suspect after purse is stolen from supermarket parking lot. A small freeway chase ensued before suspect was nabbed at his home by Glendora detectives.

A 17-year-old suspect was still behind bars tonight after he allegedly stole a woman's purse from her shopping cart at Stater Bros. earlier in the day.

The theft occurred at 3:24 p.m. in the supermarket parking lot at 1830 E. Route 66, according to Lt. Joe Ward of Glendora Police.

The female victim had her shopping cart next to her vehicle, according to Ward. She had been putting her groceries in the car and left her purse in the cart.

The suspect then grabbed the purse from the cart and ran off, according to police.

Several eyewitnesses saw the crime in progress and began chasing the suspect on foot towards the corner of Route 66 and Lope Lane, just around the corner from Stater Bros., Ward said.

The suspect jumped into a green Toyota 4Runner, which was parked on Lope Lane and sped off.

"A witness followed the suspect vehicle westbound on the 210 Freeway and obtained the license plate," Ward said.

The owner information turned up an address in San Dimas, Ward said.

Two Glendora PD detectives parked outside the residence and waited nearly an hour later when the teen showed up in the vehicle. Officers then arrested the suspect for theft, Ward said.

Soon after a Glendora resident called police to report they found a purse near the 400 block of Larkspur Avenue off of Grand Avenue and the 210 Freeway, Ward said.

The victim had her purse and all its contents returned to her, Ward said.

The suspect was held without bail and released to his parents.

He will appear in Pomona Juvenile Court, Jan. 20.
