Glendora Officers To Serve Homeless at Annual Cold Weather Shelter
St. Dorothy's Church in Glendora will host the annual cold weather shelter tonight, Dec. 23, marking 20 years the church has done so.
St. Dorothy's will be joined by 14 uniformed Glendora Police officers who will help serve the homeless at the two-week long shelter, the first time the department have done so as a group, said Tim Staab, Glendora Police Chief.
“This is an opportunity for officers to interact with the homeless in a different setting,” Staab said in a written statement. “Often officers are called upon to deal with the homeless on the street after a problem has occurred. But by serving dinner to those who are in need, officers become more empathetic, and ultimately more proactive and effective in dealing with the homeless.”
Approximately 150 guests are expected to attend, Staab said.
St. Dorothy's has sponsored the winter shelter for 13 years. The shelter is also sponsored by the East San Gabriel Valley Coalition for the Homeless.
The dinner will begin at 7 p.m. at St. Dorothy's Church, 241 South Valley Center Avenue.
