DUI Checkpoint Planned in Glendora For July Fourth Weekend

The Glendora Police Department and Los Angeles County law enforcement agencies of the Avoid the 100 DUI Task Force will host a sobriety checkpoint in an undisclosed location in Glendora Friday, July 1.

The checkpoint is one of many enforcement activities aimed at capturing alcohol or drug impaired drivers throughout the county during the holiday weekend July 1 to July 4.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, over the past 25 years, nearly half of all fatal traffic accidents every July Fourth holiday had involved some level of alcohol.

“We want people to be careful all weekend, but particularly at night,” said Glendora Police Chief Rob Castro in a press statement. He said the rate of alcohol impairment involved in fatal accidents in 2009 were four times higher at night than during the day.

Forty percent of the 410 motor vehicle fatalities across the nation during July Fourth 2009 involved drivers with blood alcohol levels of .08 or higher.

Funding for this four-day campaign is provided through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
